Reactions are now beginning to trail the recent fifty
two billion naira loan approved by the Rivers
State House of Assembly for the State
Government.
Port Harcourt based legal practitioner and social
analyst, Kennedy Amos said the criticisms against
members of the assembly for approving the loan
was uncalled for.
Amos also noted that Governor Amaechi made
the right move by following the rule of law, adding
that the loan would be utilised for the interest of
the people.
According to Amos, “under the appropriation act,
the Rivers State House of Assembly has the
powers to make such appropriation for the
executive arm of government.
“We have seasoned lawmakers and they are sons
and daughters of this state, if they did not see
any merit from the proposal of the executive arm
of government, they would not have approved it.
“The Governor, knowing that he cannot
appropriate such funds by himself, has gone to
the right forum. After all, he needs the money to
finance the various projects this administration
has embarked upon”.
On his part, Assistant Publicity Secretary of the
People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Sam Wonosike
told DailyPost that the debt profile of the Rivers
State Government had drastically increased since
the inception of this administration.
Wonosike also accused members of the Rivers
State House of Assembly of laxity, stressing that
the members only held sessions when money was
involved.
The Rivers State House of Assembly approved a
fifty billion naira loan to aide infrastructural
development in the state and another two billion
naira for medium and small scale enterprise
development.
